Basketball New Brunswick is on a mission.

A mission to bring more coaches into its system at the grassroots associations, Elite Development Program (EDP) and provincial age class teams.

‘Basketball New Brunswick has received years of dedicated commitment and service from dozens of coaches, but we know many of them have been asked to go above and beyond the call of duty,’ said BNB executive director Carolyn Peppin of Fredericton. ‘Many of our coaches are involved with programs from October through March and then are coaching spring sessions and summer teams. It’s a lot to ask and we want to begin the process of adding more coaching expertise to many of our programs.’

BNB has a number of coaches with grassroots programs or coaching at the under-14, under-12 and middle school levels.

However, that hasn’t fully translated to coaches working with BNB’s highly successful EDP sessions, typically held during the spring and fall months.

‘Our player numbers for EDP are off the charts and it’s trending to increase to the point where we need more hands on deck from a coaching perspective to ensure quality programming,’ said Peppin. ‘BNB understands we need more coaches across the province and we want to offer some incentives to create more awareness and willingness to be a part of what we’re doing.’

For U14 and middle school level coaches who are interested in joining EDP in the fall of 2017, BNB will provide a voucher for a National Coaching Certification Program Learn to Train (L2T) or Train to Train (T2T) weekend session to ensure proper training and confidence.

Typically, the weekend courses are available at $150-$175, but BNB is preparing to make that next step.

‘If a coach is interested in committing to one of our regional EDP groups in the fall and spring, we will make arrangements that they have their certification augmented,’ Peppin said. ‘Taking that first step can be challenging and maybe even a little intimidating. We have qualified coaches who are all about wanting to help new coaches, but it’s an outstanding way to gain more knowledge about what we’re teaching. It’s a win-win situation on so many levels. Coaches can absorb more knowledge from watching and participating and take it back to the teams they are coaching at the minor or middle school levels. It creates an energy of consistency.’
