Basketball day on the River will take place at Miramichi Valley High School on Wednesday January 3rd. It will be a fun filled day of hoops that will finish with a men's university basketball game between the University of Prince Edward Island and St. Thomas University.

Basketball day on the River will take place at Miramichi Valley High School on Wednesday January 3rd. It will be a fun filled day of hoops that will finish with a men's university basketball game between the University of Prince Edward Island and St. Thomas University.

The event will be hosted by Miramichi Valley High School and River Hoops with all proceeds going towards the Pulamoo bus fundraiser. The day will begin at 10 AM with a youth basketball clinic for boys and girls currently in grades 3 to 8. The camp will be put on by St. Thomas University coaches and players and will focas on basic fundamentals, game play and fun small sided games. At 2 PM the River Hoops Ladies U14 (Team Black) will face the 506 Elite out of Moncton. Following the U14 game the MVHS and JMH JV girls' teams will hit the court at 3:45 PM for a crossriver rivalry game. The Miramich Special Olympians have issued a challenge to the City of Miramichi councillors that will be settled on the court at 5:15 PM followed by the main event between UPEI and STU which will start at 6:15 PM. St. Thomas University head coach John Hickey commented "we are really looking forward to getting up to Miramichi in the new year to play a game and to be able to put on a clinic too. We have two Miramichi players Owen Amos and Evan Vallane and two coaches in Travis Valanne and Ian Watters with our team this year. It is great to be able to play in thier backyard in front of  family, friends and community."  Basketball Day on the River is a day to celebrate the sport basketball in the City of Mirmichi. Miramichi City Councillor Jason Harris commented "It should be a great day not only basketball in the Miramichi but the community as a whole. It is also a great day to get out and see a high level game of basketball, all while supporting the Miramich Special Olympians, minor basketball and Miramichi Valley High School." Tickets to attend the games are $5 for adults and $3 for students with children under 12 admitted for free. One ticket will get you you into all four games. The basketball clinic being put on by STU coaches and players will run from 10 AM until 1 PM for players in grades 3 to 8. The cost for a player to attend the clinic is $30 per player (family rate of $20 for additional siblings attending). Justin Cortes the Athletic Director of MVHS was quoted as saying " We have been raising funds for a new bus and we are really looking forward to hosting this first time event. It is always great when we can have events for the youth at our school and in our community and it is great that they get to see a very high level basketball being played right here at MV."  A full list of day events are listed below. Tickets will be available in advance at Kingston Fuels (Petro-Canada) locations starting on Thursday December 28th or can be purchased at the door.
