River Hoops Basketball Association is proud to announce the return of the Liz Doyle University Hoops on the River Showcase, taking place October 10–11, 2025, in Miramichi. This long-awaited basketball event will be held in memory of Liz Doyle, whose passion and vision helped bring university-level basketball to the Miramichi region.
This year’s showcase will feature three men’s university programs:
- University of St. Thomas Tommies (Host School)
- UNB Saint John Seawolves
- Cape Breton University Capers
The University Hoops on the River Showcase was first launched in 2010 by Liz Doyle, who believed that young athletes in Miramichi should have the same opportunities as those in larger centers to witness high-level basketball and aspire to play at that level themselves. The event quickly became a highlight on the local basketball calendar, attracting top programs from across Atlantic Canada, Quebec, Ontario, and even teams from Maine.
Although it was last held in 2012, an attempt was made to revive the showcase in 2021, but the Covid-19 pandemic prevented it from taking place. Now, in 2025, the tradition proudly returns—offering fans, families, and athletes the chance to experience elite university basketball while paying tribute to Liz Doyle’s lasting impact.
“Liz’s vision was always about creating opportunities for young players here in Miramichi,” said Danny Richard, member of the organizing committee. “Bringing back the University Hoops Showcase in her memory is both a celebration of basketball and a way to continue the legacy she left in our community.”
Liz Doyle, a standout player, coach, and mentor, dedicated her life to basketball locally and provincially, coaching high school and provincial teams, and inspiring countless athletes along the way. She passed away in 2023 at the age of 42 after a courageous battle with cancer, but her vision and commitment continue to shape basketball in the region
