Miramich Hoops Season Wrap-up

The competitive season for Miramichi Hoop’s basketball programs has come to an end for all but two teams. The Under 13 teams for both boys and girls are still operating and looking forward to attending Provincials on April 16 and 17. Miramichi Hoops will also be offering spring leagues for boys and girls currently in grades 3, 4 and 5. For more information on spring leagues please visit the Miramichi Hoops site at miramichihoops.goalline.ca. Below is a general overview for each of the teams operated by Miramichi Hoops this season.

Girl’s Programs

The Junior Mini team consisted of 15 girls, 5 in Grade 4, and 9 in Grade 3 and 1 in Grade 2. The team practiced once a week working exclusively on individual skills. They played 4 games during the season against elementary teams and finished the season in March.  Junior Mini is up to Grade 4 and this year’s team was very young with 10 player’s still Junior Mini age next year. There will be a Spring League for Grade 2/3 girls at Gretna Green on Tuesday nights, starting April 12 at 6:00.

The Pulamoo Mini Girls Developmental “B” Team had a very successful 2010-2011 season. The team started with 16 players, and finished the year with 15.  The team was made up of 11 grade 6 players and 4 grade 4 players. We had a good core of returning players from the 2009-2010 Jr. Mini Pulamoo team, but about half of our players were new to the Pulamoo Association and to basketball. This team was focused on learning and improving fundamental basketball skills. The team attended the “AAA” tier 3 NB Basketball Championships held in Saint John. The girls came away with a 2-2 record at the championships and won the bronze medal. We had a great year and a lot of fun.

The Mini Competitive team moved up from AA to AAA Tier 1 this year where they won the bronze medal at the provincial championships. This was the second year in a row that the team competed at the higher level. The team consisted of 14 players and attended 4 invitational tournaments, winning gold at the River Valley and Miramichi Hoops tournaments, and silver at the Tommie and KVBA Invitational. Spring League for Grade 4/5 girls starts Thursday April 14 at Gretna Green at 6:00.

The Bantam Girls Pulamoo, coached by Hedley Doak and Duane Harris had nine players on the team. This included seven from Harkins Middle School and two from Millerton School. The bantam Pulamoo players also played for their school teams throughout the year. The season consisted of several practices, one exhibition game, one exhibition tournament and the provincial championships.

The Pulamoo finished fourth at the River Valley Invitational tournament, which was their first competition of the year. The team’s season ended at the Bantam AA Provincials held in St. George with the Pulamoo competing for the bronze medal. After losing a hard fought game 39-33 to the Sackville Titans, the Pulamoo had to settle for fourth place. Pulamoo guard Lindsey Gallant earned a Provincial All-Star award at the championships. The team worked hard and improved with solid efforts in every competition.

Boy’s Programs

The Pulamoo Mini Boys Developmental team operated starting in October and concluded the first week of March. The Developmental struggled with having enough players to play games for most of the season. The boys practiced and played locally.

The Pulamoo Mini Boys Rep team finished the year with a record of 26 wins and 10 losses. The boys were able to win the Basketball New Brunswick AA Provincial title. Other highlights of the season were winning the Miramichi Mini Hoop Classic and finishing second at the Riverview tournament. Six of the twelve players will be moving on to bantam next season with six returning to defend the Provincial title.

The Pulamoo Bantam Boys Rep team competed at the Basketball New Brunswick AA Provincials in River Valley. The boys finished with a record of 0 wins and 3 losses at Provincials. The team was comprised of players from Harkins Middle School with one player from Millerton School.
