Basketball New Brunswick Offering Super Clinic for Coaches

2013-09-09

Basketball New Brunswick will be hosting a Super Coaching Clinic in Saint John on September 27 and 28. Roy Rana the head coach of the Junior Men's National team will headline the clinic.

Basketball New Brunswick is coming off one of its most successful summers on the court.

With provincial teams putting together solid performances at age-class Canadian championships and BNB hosting the largest version of its annual Canaport LNG Summerfest tournament, the momentum keeps coming this month.

BNB is taking on a large initiative when it comes to coaching, hosting its first BNB Super Coaching Clinic sponsored by Maple Leaf Foods from Sept. 27 to 28.

For the clinic, BNB is bringing in the head coach of Canada Basketball Junior Men’s team which is coming off a recent sixth place finish at the under-19 world championship, the highest ever finish for this age group in global competition.

Roy Rana, who coached Team Canada to that finish, is also the head coach of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Ryerson University Rams. Rana will lead the clinic, scheduled for the University of New Brunswick in Saint John in conjunction with BNB’s Awards Night and Annual General Meeting that weekend at the Delta Saint John.

Rana will lead coaches with sessions the evening of Sept. 27 and the morning of Sept. 28. Several local NB coaches will also be presenting throughout the event on Friday evening and all-day Saturday, in addition to a rules panel question and answer opportunity with local officials. There will also be a coach’s social Sept. 27.

The clinic is open to coaching at all development and competitive streams.

"This is a unique and outstanding opportunity to learn from one of the nation’s top coaches, but it’s not all high level teaching," said BNB executive director Carolyn Peppin. "We want our coaches attending the sessions to take away ideas, drills, thoughts and processes and implement them with their own teams whether it’s recreational, mini, bantam, middle school, high school or beyond. It’s an opportunity for coaches at all stages which is why BNB wanted this to unfold. Bringing in Mr. Rana is a huge boost for BNB."

The cost for the clinic is $75 for both days or $50 if you’re planning to attend Sept. 28 only.

Coaches are asked to pre-register by email at info@basketball.nb.ca or by calling (506) 472-4667.

The first 80 coaches to register will receive a BNB souvenir.

If you are interested in attending the BNB awards night or AGM, the Delta Saint John is the official hotel with rates at $109 plus tax per night.
